Occupations

An occupation an actual job. A fighter can be an adventurer, that is his occupation, but can also be a city guardsmen, which is another occupation. In both cases the person uses their fighting abilities. In the case of the guardsman however, those skills are used in a more subdued way and in a terrian and location that is constant. The adventurer, uses those skills everywhere.

Commoners

Most commoners generally can not compare to the standard adventurer. Lower stats, very little drive and are compelled by little more than basic suvival. Do my job, go home, relax, sleep, repeat. Basically just like us. However, so,me professions require higher stats, higher drive and a willingness to strive for something better.

A tailor can not produce exceptional work if there is no drive behind it. Even with exceptional drive, with out a higher than normal dexterity the quality will not be there, or the time to produce a quality item will be prolonged to a point the person will never be able to make enough coing to live.

A commoners base stats start at 6, then racial adjustments are made then the commoner gains 2d6 points to spread out across the abilities. A profession can increase these stats further, such as a blacksmith or carpenter for strength, street performer or tailor for dexterity, Librarian or alchemist for intelligence and so on. As they gain in level their stats will also increase, but unlike adventurers, only the prime abilities in those profession increase and a player will not be able to choose.

Basic commoners also can not focus in a weapon, they can only obtain proficency with a weapon or armor and are not able to pick up many specialized combat feats. This is where occupations come in.

The Occupation

Unlike a profession where someone learns basically through apprentiship, occupations have intense training programs and take only those people who met the ability requirements. Doing this allows these NPCs or players to be exceptional commoners that gain access to specialized combat feats and able to expand ability scores with more flexibility. These characters will never be on the same level as an adventurer, but on thier playing filed can out do some of the strongest adventurers.
